THE PRINCE AMONG DAIRY FARMERS.
TOUCHING CEREMONY AT WAR. STRIKEN TOWN. TJnder the above heading the London "* Times correspondent with the Prince of a l Wales thus describes the Prince's jour- P ney through Taranaki. S 1 "This morning," lie says, "the Prince ei visited three towns under the shadow c< of snow-capped Egmont, all prosperous E I centres, not the least industry of which e is the production of well-nourished children. These filled the eye with the waving of flags and the throwing of flowers wherever we went." "At New Plymouth, one of the earli- ® est settlements, now a growing port, * they made the letters of "Ich Dein" in t the deep-terraced banks of a natural ® amphitheatre circled with trees high I above its pit. It was like a deep well I filled with humanity with emotions s bubbling up Tound the central figure of i the Prince. i "Different was the welcome at Strat-. i ford, for here, thovgli children had 1 their turn, an air of mourning prevailed 1 —of Stratford's 600 sent to the war a 1 hundred had died. After an address had been presented to him the Prince walked through the municipal gallery, cutting a white ribbon as he entered, and there- . by unveiling lines of photographs of the • dead, a simple but beautiful meriiprial : of Stratford's lost sons. The gallery , led to the council chamber, where 70 , mothers and a few widows of the dead were gathered. The Prince shook hands with them all. Some could not restrain their tears, others smiled bravely, but all plainly connected their boys with the gallant figure of the Prince. One had lost four sons, and, a fifth died on his return. He lingered in the chamber long after the quiet black-robed women had passed, and wc were late throughout the rest of the day. "At Hawera two holders of the Victoria Cross led the Prince along a lane of 6,000 children, all looking dairy fed, who shouted themselves hoarse. They threw chrysanthemums on the lawn for the Prince's return."
