WESTERN PARK.

"NEW COMMITTEE ELECTED. PROGRESSIVE POLICY FAVORED. There was au attendance of fourteen residents at the meeting which was held in the West End Bowling Club's pavilion last night for the purpose of electing a new committee to control the park in place of the committee wnich recently resigned. Mr. P. J. Hill represented the the Borough Council, and in the absence of the Mayor, from whom an apology waS received, Mr. G. A. Corney was voted to the chair. The following committee fras elected: . Messrs. G. A. Corney, G. F. Styles, A. L. Humphries, F. L. Hartnell, E. B. Kingdon, V. Elliott, L. H. Honeyfield, E. Hine, J. B. Barthorp, W. D. Webster, and A. C. Lawrey. It was pointed out that the committee could- comprise up to thirty members, | and Mr. Sole suggested that in complct- ; ing the number the committee should • appoint representatives of various sport- , ing bodies, including football, cricket, , tennis, etc. The chairman considered that they had the nucleus of a good Board. The park had great possibilities, and the old committee recognised this, but owing to the war they had not been able to do much. The Morley Street frontage, particularly, had been , neglected, but this was due to the fact that the Borough Council had not been able to supply the levels of the proposed tram route. He agreed that an endeavour should be made to popularise the park. Mr. Webster stated that the Tukapa Club hoped to be in a position to assist the board with funds shortly. Football was. regaining its former popularity, and the crowd at the park on' Saturday last showed that the public appreciated good football. *The play at the park was superior not so much because the teams were of better to those playing elsewhere, but because the ground was better. The Recreation Ground, he added,- was a natural swamp in which it was impossible to play good football. The following were appointed an j executive: Messrs. A. L. Humphries (chairman). G. A. Corney, F. L. Hart- , nell, V. Elliott. J. G. Barthrop, W. D. and L. H. Honeyfield (secretary). Mr. G. A. Corney declined nomination as chairman, though pressed to stand, members eulogising, his valuable services in the past. Mr. A. I* Humphries expressed regret that the old committee had resented the attitude of the Borough Council. This, he thought, was due to a misunderstanding, and one of his first endeavours would be to wait on them with a view to persuading them to think betier of the matter. . They had a good board, and there would be no question that Western Park lent itself admirably, both as a recreation and sports ground, and they must devise ways and means to improve it.
