BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING.

June 29. A special meeting of the Stratford Borough Council was held last evening. Present:—The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan), and Crs. K. 11. Cameron, W. II 11. > oung, A. Stewart, J. H. Thompson, T. Lawsou, W. J. Newton, and C. B. Walsh.

Mr. T. C. Fookes, borough solicitor, attended and explained certain formalities in connection with the adoption of the new bylaws for the borough. Formal resolutions, as required by the Municipal Corporations Act, were carried.

It is understood the by-laws will come into operation 011 August flth. The meeting then discussed in detail the schedule of proposed street improvements, drainage, etc., prior to placing before the ratepayers proposals to raise a loan for the purpose of carrying out same. The total amount of the loan is £130,250, made up as follows:—Drainage £50,000; water, £28,000; Victoria Bridge, £10,000; destructor, £1500; streets, £35,000; public convenience.. £750; electric light, £SOOO. It was resolved that the whole of the loan be placed before the ratepayers at one issue. FORESTERS' LODGE. The half-yearly meeting of Court Stratford, A.0.F., was held on Monday night. Bro. J. D. Murray, P.D.C.R., occupied the chair, and initiated the new members, afterwards installing the following officers for the ensuing term:— C.R., Bro. R. Plews; S.C.R., Sister Edith E. Murray; S.W., Sister C. M. Watkins; J.W., Sister G. Broadley; 5.8., Bro. C. E. Murray; J. 8., Bro. S. Hatcher; Auditors, Sister Watkins and Bro. Lawrence; delegate to half-yearly District meeting, Bro. 6. Burgess.

At the close of the meeting the usual fortnightly social was held, when a large assemblage took the floor, and all present enjoyed a pleasant time, dancing being continued till 2.15 a.m, with Bros. Murray and Plews as M.C.'s. The music by Miss Reilly was all that could be desired; also the supper and floor were voted to be very satisfactory. Extras were kindly contributed by Messrs. Lloyd and Crossnn. GENERAL. Mr. Frank X. Grant, who for the pust four years has been 011 the literary staff of the Stratford Evening Post, and who, having decided on making a change, is taking up a position at New Plymouth, was the. recipient this morning of a presentation as a mark of esteem from all members of the staff. In making the presentation, the editor spoke of Mr. Grant's ability and promising career, and on behalf of all present, wished him t)jo greatest success in the future. The weekly meeting of the Stratford Boys' and Girls' Improvement Association was held last night, in the Parish Hall, when there were about ISO present* The subject for discussion was:— "'Which exerts the greater influence, Love or Money';" The young people very ably expressed their opinions. The President {the Rev. C. W. Howard) gave a short chat upon the Melanesian Islands. A flower gnessing competition, conducted by Mrs. Faokes, was a grea; success, the first prize being won by Deris Mclnnes. and the second prize liv John Brooks. The prizes were generously donated by Mrs. Fookes and Miss Dudding. Instruction in stamp-collectir." was in the hands of Miss Stanford, the keenest interest being shown by both boys and girls. An .impromptu entertainment, conducted by Mr. C. M. Curteis, helped considerably towards the success of the evening. Musical items ivere rendered by Lindsay Ruscoe (mandolin) and Percy Alger (piano - ), both lads being heartily aplauded. The singing of the National Anthem concluded the proceedings. A general meeting of the Stratford Returned Soldiers' Association will in held in the Parish Ilall to-morrow evening, to discuss what action should be taken concerning the curtailment of advances to soldiers. The proposal to hold a re-union will also be discussed. 1 Three additional seats have been added to the vestibule of the Municipal Buildings, two of- which were presented to the Council by Mr. Campbell Jackson, and one by Masters, LtdThe appearance of an electric scooter in Broadway this afternoon caused a crowd to gather. This unusual machine, which was ridden by Mr. J. H. Bodle, of Eltlmm, attracted considerable attention, and many were the queries put to its owner by tfle curious.
