STRATFORD.

(Stratford Representative: W. IBroadway North, 'Phone 338. P.O. Bos 123.) SCHOOL COMMITTEES' ASSOCIATION June 28. The annual meeting of the Stratford School Committees' Association waß held in the Stratford School on Saturday, and was attended by the following delegates; —Mrs. Hollands, Mr. J. Martin, and Mr. W. Pinhey (Stratford), Mrs. I- Cuthbert (Pembroke Road), Messrs. D. Blackstock (Pukengahu), J. Pattinson (Bird lioad). W. J. Wellington and T. E. Bell (Stanley Road). Mr. G. E. Bocock (honorary secretary) wrote apologising for absence, and stating that he could not accept the position again. Mr. J. Martin was appointed secretary pro tem. The president (Mr. J. W. Boon), in moving the adoption of the report, said an improvement had .taken place in educational affairs of late, a great deal of credit for same being due to the combined efforts of the School Committees. He believed there would soon be a marked improvement in education. There had been too much book.work in the past, and in the future a different line would be followed in the direction of better practical effect upon the children. H* would not like to see. the School Committees taking a place in politics unless members were antagonistic to the interests of education. ' j Mr. Pattinson seconded the motion, which was carried. Office-bearers were elected as follows: —(President, Mr. W. Pinhey; secretary and treasurer, Mr. D- M. Clarke; exccu i tive committee, Messrs. G. E. Boccck, T E. Bell, D. Blackstock, and E. Maifell. Mr. Boon said that it was just pos- j sible they would nflt be able to disestab-1 lish the High School this year. The pre- j sent crowded state of the school was j very unhealthy. He moved that the Edu- j cation Board be notified that no ore was j working on the new building, although I there appeared to be plenty of cement to | hand. ' j Mrs. Hollands seconded the motion, | which was supported by Mr. Pinhey. j Mr- Boon contrasted the expedition hi connection with the new Hawera Technical School with the go-slow pfllicy at Stratford. Also, a hostel had been purchased in Hawera. Stratford did not appear to be getting a fair deal. The motion was carried unanimously. It was resolved to ask Mr. R. Masters, M.P., to represent the Association at the Conference in Wellington on 12th July. It was decided to recommend that the annual conference of the Taranaki School Committees' Association should be held in Stratford next year. On the motion of Mr. Pattinson, it was resolved to draw the attention of the Education Board to the fact .that certain young temporary teachers were being appointed who had no control of the children, which was not in the best interests of education. GENERAL. Search parties are still looking for traces of the missing man, W. Smith, who is supposed to have been drowned in the Manganui river, and his overcoat has been found in the river. The late Professor J. A- MeClelan.l, who died in Dublit\, Ireland, recently, at the age of 50, was a cousin of Mr. J Morrison, Opunake Road, Stratford. He is survived by a widow and three children. The Professor had just finished his fourth year as examiner in physics for the New Zealand University, and was starting upon the papers of the fifth year. There is great need in Stratford at the present time for something in the nature of a hostel for girls employed in shops and offices, and on account of the difficulty in getting accommodation for their staff some employers are finding it difficult to obtain assistants. Private people in Stratford seem very much averse to girl boarders, and it seems that the only way out of the difficulty is to set up a citizens' committee for the purpose of establishing a hostel in the town. The movement should receive the hearty cooperation of all business firms employing girls. One employer stated recently that he had been unable to retain the services of several of his young lady assistants in his shop simply because he could not find board for them. The girls had come to Stratford, stayed a few days at hotels because there was nowhere else to go, and then left the town in disgust. He believed that if a movement was once launched, the business people would give it their hearty support, because it was within our interests to do so. Those on the look-out for good household furniture and effects are reminded of the clearing sale by Mr. T. I. Lamason. to be held on the premises, Warwick Road East, this afternoon, at 1 o'clock. Mr. Smith Howard is leaving the district, and has decided to quit everything. The advertisement on page S discloses a long list of useful furniture, besides a quantity of other sundries.
