DOMESTIC HARDSHIPS.
TENEMENT CASKS IN AUCKLAND. Several applications for possession of tenements which .were heard at the Auckland Magistrate's Court last week, disclosed a series of domestic, hardships. One solicitor, as he walked into the Court with the owner and tenant, side by side, remarked:"l am sorry for both of you, because you are such decent chaps." One owner had bought another house, rather than turn out an old tenant, and then found lie could not get possession of the newly-purchased house. A lady said she had tried to get a tworoomed fish shop that was empty, but was too late. Had she secured it, a family of six were going to crowd into it. A working man said he had nine' children, and found he would not be let into an empty hon.-e if he found one. Mr. Poynton, S.M., drily remarked, '■No; children,, I suppose, are not wanted now." In one case, evidence was given by the plaintiff that at present he, with his wife and family, were living in a five-roomed house, which was also occupied by the owner and his son, who expected his wife and daughter home directly. Another witness stated that he purchased a property, because lie had received notice to get'out, and the defendant said he had a wife and five children, and could not get another house. Mr. Poynton said it was impossible to turn women and children on to the street, it -was a hard case on each side, both being working men. An order was made for possession in two months' lime.
In yet another ease, the defendant said it was impossible to get another house. He had nine children, and when he found an empty dwelling he could not rent it. Mr. Poynton said the hardship was on the tena.nt. who would have great trouble to get a house when he had nine children. The' application was not granted.
