PERSONAL.

The King has conferred the Grand Cross Michael on Sir Thomas Mackenzie (says a cable from London). A cable from Sydney says the Rev. 0 Farrell, vice-Rector of St. John's College, Sydney, has been appointed Soman Catholic Bishop of Bathhurst. Mr. C. V. Houghton, Auckland manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, arrived in New Plymouth by the Rarawa yesterday. Mr. Houghton returns north to-night. Mr. L. Craig, who Ims been on the, staff of the Bank of New Zealand at Manah for some years, has severed his connection with that institution in order to go farming at Ngaere. Mr. Chote, of Weilington, takes Mr. place in the Bank.—Witness.

Mr. D. A. Aiken, general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company,, and Mr. G. H. Bullock, general manager i»f the New Zealand Shipping Company, arrived in New Plymouth yesterday morning from Auckland. They leave for Wellington this morning. General Sir William Birdwood arrived at Blenheim yesterday, and received a civic reception (nays a Press telegram). There was a large attendance, including returned soldiers. Addresses were delivered by the Mayor, and the president of the Returned Soldiers' Association, Afterwards the General was entertained at the Soldiers' Club.

The death took place at. Okato last evening of Mr. Francis Ashley, an old and respected settler of the.coast. He arrived in New Plymouth in the year 1875, and had lived the remainder of his life on the coast. His wife predeceased him by 14 years. He leaves' one son, Mr. V. A. Ashley, of Okato. • At its meeting this week, the Taranaki Land Board resolved that the sympathy of the members be extended" to Mr. E. D. Ansford, who has been prominently connected with the valuation of properties for returned soldiers, in the loss he has sustained through the death of his wife in a recent motor car I fatality at Onaero. Mr. W. J. Penn, of our local contemporary, who is leaving for Canada to attend the Press Conference, was yesterday the recipient of a travelling rug from the members of the Herald staff, and a similar gift was made to Mrs- Penn by the proprietor of the paper. Later in the afternoon the members of the Taranaki Club and Chamber of Commerce foregathered at the Club, and wished Mr. Penn and his wife bon voyage and a safe return.

A very serious and painful accident befell Mr. E. Duggan, of Inaha, on Tuesday night. He was proceeding home from Manaia to Kaponga with his motor lorry, when he noticed that the lorry was leaking from the benzine tank. It was after dusk, and to ascertain the whereabouts of the leakage he used one of his lamps to .see, and immediately the whole of the lorry was in flames. His clothing alsj went ablate, and he was terribly burnt on both arms, hands and legs. His condition is very serious, and his sufferings extreme. He was attended by Dr. Maunsell, and afterwards conveyed in the ambulance to the Hawera Hospital.—Star.

Professor .T. A. M'Cleland, who dial at Dublin, Ireland, in April last, had just finished ■ his fourth year \as examiner in physics for the New Zealand University, and was starting upon the papers of the fifth year. The late Mr. McCloland wa3 Professor of 'Experimental Physics at University College, Dublin, and was one of the most eminent men of science in Ireland. During the war lie did valuable work for tha Government as a member of the Inventions Committee and of the Committee for the Organisation of Industrial Research. Ho developed at University College, Dublin, a school of research which has produced results of wide and lasting value. It is most probable that the examiner who wil' complete the work left unfinished by the late Mr. McCleland will be Professor Bragg, of University College, London.
