STRATFORD.

(Stratford Representatlre: W. J. Wilson, Broadway North. Thone 338. P.O. BoiilSS.) June 24. An enjoyable social and dance, in aid of the «ehool funds of the District Higa School, was held in the Town Hall last evening. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the attendance was small, but those who attended entered heartily into the evening's entertainment. Dance music was supplied by Fox's Orchestra, and an excellent supper was provided by the Indies' committee. It is probable that another social will be held shortly, when it is to be hoped there will be a large attendance. No trace has yet been found of the missing man, W. Smith, who, it is concluded, endeavored to ford the Manganui river last -Monday afternoon. A diligent search has been made by Sergt. Dale, Constable Tizard, and about thirty settlers, and the river has been dragged for some distance despite the fact that it is still very high. The search will be continued as soon as the staLe of the river permits. The Stratford Schools Committees' Association will hold its,annual meeting on Saturday at 2 p.m., when the following report for year ending June 20th, will be submitted:—Your executive report a very successful year's work. Six general meetings were held, and at each one very good work was done. One Hundred copies of branch rules were printed and circulated, numbering 31. The Association has , done all possible in pressing the need for speedy erection of the Stratford Technical High School. The following matters have been dealt with and representations made to headquarters: That no privileges be granted to private schools that are not enjoyed by the State schools; that hostels be established for boys and girls at each High School, so that the children in the country may have an opportunity of obtaining a secondary education without going far away from home; the standardisation of school books in the Dominion was also advocated. During the year we joined the Federation of School Cominittees' Association. The following are the results of the root competitions held by the Toko' Settlers' Association:—Swedes—W. H. Smith) 3, C. Bayly (C. Lofroth) 4, A- J. Chainey 3. On Monday evening last Mr. W. A. Hewitt, manager of the local branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd., on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. Arthur Dickinson, the company's motor mechanic, with a handsome set of carvers, on the eve of his marriage. Mr. Hewitt wished Air. Dickinson every prosperity, and referred to the, esteem in which Mr. Dickinson was held by himself and stall', during the ten years he had been in the company's service. Supporters of the Reform Party are invited to attend the general meeting to he held on Saturday in the Town Hall, Stratford, at 2.30 p.m. T. Lamason inserts a preliminary notice in this issue of a furniture sale on account of Mr. Smith Howard.
