There is a growing volume of protests from Anglo-Australian commercial circles and from French and Italian manufacturers regarding the Australian customs regulation charging duty on imported foreign goods at the value based on the pre-war rate of exchange. London houses of Australian importing firms agree that the effect has been i to force them to buy from English importing firmß instead of buying direct from French and Italian manufacturers, i because it is cheaper to pay the wholesalers' profit.
