MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. WESTERN PARK DEADLOCK. The monthly meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council was held last ■ night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. Jas. Clarke), and Crs. .1. W. Hayden,' F. .1. •V Hill, W. F. Short, W. A. Collis, A. S. id Brookor, R. L. Parkin, A. E. Sykes, and V. Griffiths. The various reports were received, and the Council then sat as the General Purposes Committee. The recent resignation of the Western Park Board, which arose out of the controversy regarding Reserve T., .was reported by the secretary of the Board , e (Mr. V. Duff). Some doubt was expressed as to whether the board was in order, but to place the matter beyond doubt, the Council passed a' resolution resuming control of the park. Jt was further (Tended to - call a public meeting to appoint a new committee to control the park on behalf le of the Borough Council. I STREET BEAUTIFYING. 'P k ' The most suitable tree for street t- planting was the subject of a letter from the curator of Pukekura Park. Mr. W. W. Smith said that after careful observation and experience in New Plymouth during the last twelve years he recommended puriri, the Japanese flowering i. cherry, and pohutakawa. II It was pointed out that a sum of d money had been allotted for planting ' Liardet Street, and councillors discussed e the most suitable tree to beautify the ' street. Eventually the puriri and thfJapanese cherry found most favor, and it was decided to purchase sufficient trees" to plant the border? of Liardet Street. Later, as funds are available, other streets will be planted. AVENUE BOUNDARY ROAD. The Taranaki County Council applied for half cost (£136 6s Id) of the work already completed in connection with the !. Avenue Boundary Road, r A considerable amount of corresponi dence was involved in this matter, and, r summed up, it showed that when tli.; negotiations were originally commenced r in November, 1910, the estimated work 0 entailed an expenditure of £142, o! " which the Borough Council was to pay half. This the Borough Council agreed 1 to do, but now it appeared that more e work had been done, and consequently the total expenditure had grown, inereasl ing the Borongh Council's liability from s £7l to £136- In addition to this there 5. would be a further expenditure of £64 for tarring. Councillors expressed the opinion that • the' trouble was due to the County Couut c ji having proceeded with the work with--1 out consulting the Borough Council. ' After further discussion it was de- ' cided to defer the matter until further b particulars were received from the County Council. j general. 1 A request was received from Mr. . Sangster (Stratford) asking the Cou»1 cil to meet a deputation in regard to 1 the Toko leases.—The Council thought 1 no good purpose could be served by the ' deputation, but, nevertheless, decided to receive it next Monday night. Seven ratepayers petitioned the Council asking for repairs to be carried out to Wallath Road, Westown, in order that vehicles might use the road during the winter.—The matter was left in the hands of the engineer.
