STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council was held on Saturday. Present: Crs. E. Walter (chairman), T. E. Coleman, F. J. Mackay, .T. O'Neill, L. Baskln, E. W. Hancock, W. XI. Were, and H. B. Worth* lngton. ENGINEER'S BEPOBT. The engineer (Mr. J. W. Spencc) reported as follows: North Biding (East) .—Owing to extra labor belli? necessary for running the crusher In connection with the refuting of a portion of the Mountain Road, this portion of. the riding has not received its usuul attention in the wav of repair work. The following roads have received a certain amount of attention: Esk, Beaconsfleld, Salisbury, Cros3, Croydon West, and Stanley, where patching i and water-tabling liavo been carried out. A 1 Email slip on the Croydon Koad has been cleared away, and small repairs have been effected to the decking of the Stanley Road stoel bridge. North Hiding (West).—The greater portion of the past period has been occupied in refaclng Mountain Koad from the borough boundary to ths Kahouri Road, the work being considerably Interrupted by broken weather. The Denbigh, Lower Pembroke and Monmouth Roads hare been repaired. These and other roads in this riding have suffered considerably through firewood and other heavy carting. South Riding.—A portion of the Mountain Road between the railway crossing and the north end of the tar has been refaced. Prom the railway crossing to the borough boundary a considerable amount of patching has been done. The Cllmle, Skinner, Cheal, QfU, and Flnnerty Roads have also received attention. The work of cutting down the hill at the Ngaere factory will be put in hand when sufficient stone is available for refacing the portion of the Flnnerty Road that will be effected. East Riding (Toko).—The whole of the period has been taken up with road repair work, in the way of patching water-tabling, etc. on the following roads: Ohura, Toko, Raupahu, Waiwiri, and Ahuroa. The roller now being available it is proposed to roll the five chains of now metaj on the Waiwiri Road, while on that road the roller can bo utilised for rolling in a few necessary patches. The foreman advises that he will be In a position at the end of the month to undertake the decking of the Makuri stream bridge 011 the Raupahu Road, It will probably bo necessary to close the bridge for traffic i while this work Is In hand. The redecklng .' of the Station Road bridge at Tolto will be ■' undertaken on completion of the forimer bridge. The drains on the Standlsh Road have keen cleaned out, also tho drains on both sides of the Main Road at Finchaln's Plat, In the case of the latter, little benefit can be gained till the necessary outlet is clear. The owner of the property has been notified but has so far not taken any notice. East Riding (Douglas).—General maintenance work has been carried out on the Ohura Rond from ttt> Toko School to Douglas. The Douglas South Road from the Main Road to the Saddle has been water-tabled and patched, Tho Makuri drains have been cleaned out and a start made on the drains on the west side of Ohuru Road. East Riding (Hulron) —The drains and water-tables on tho Mohakau and Altama Roads have been attended to; a considerable amount of water-tabling on the Douglas North and South Roads, water-tabling and patching on the Makuri Road, In the case of the latter road [in attempt will he mado to send up some patching metal for repair work. Two sets of pipes have been put in in the Mo-hal-au Rond, and the outlet from the pipe culvert has been cleaned out and where possible straightened to the creek, West Riding—Several of the roads on the north of the Opunako Road have suffered considerably through heavy carting, these roads have as far as possiblo been repaired. On the Opunnlre No. 11 about 30 chains have been refaced from the Ronald Roml to the Cardiff Hill, a light refacing has also been carried out from the Waingomroro bridge to the Cardiff Road. About 100 yards of stone have been crushed and distributed on the Walngongoro Road. Maneaehu Riding.—General repair work has been carried nut on the Mangnehu and Mangaotuku Heads, four sets of pipes have been put in the runiwhak'au, two sets In the Tututawn, and one set in the Kaltlekl Road. Tho slips on Clark's track have been cleared away and a small bridge erected. The Contractors on the Manga Road have almost completed the'r contracts. MANAWAIWERA ROAD. Mr. A. Bretherton wrote nsfclng the Council to consider tho question of opening tin the Manawalwera Road for a distance of 140 chains, which lie estimated would cost about 30r, per chain. Later In the meeting Mr. Bretherton waited on the Council In connection with the matter, and said that lie prlnclpr.il)' desired tho Council to give him an assurfince that If any of the sections were sold, they would help In putting the road In order. The Council agreed to this tint' -standing. MT. EGMONT QUARRIES. Mr. R. Masters, M P., «rote stating that he was co-operating with other local bodies in urging the Government to re-open the Mt. Egmont quarries. He believed there was practically an inexhaustible supply of stone available, and favored the re-opening of the quarry. Prom Information supplies to him by tlte Public Works Department, the price at which It could bo supplied varied on the output per annum, from 19s Od per cubic yard for 1:1,000 cubic yards, to 8s per yard for 60,000 cubic yards. He desired to know the requirements of the Council per annum.— It was decided to reply that the Council could glva no Information as to its possible requirements from the Mt. Egmont quarry. WAIPUKU HILL. A petition signed by 34 ratepayers and residents on the Croydon, Mountain, and York Roads was received asking that the Walpulru Hill from the station to the gully below Mr. tlhlenberg's property, be made safe for horse and vehicular traffic, as at present It was not safe to travel over. There had been numerous accidents at the hill, and It should bo seen to at the earliest possible moment. In connection with the petition, a depution waited on the Council and explained the position. The chairman :ald tho road in question had given the Council some concern, and the engineer had already been Instructed to see to it. He as3ured the deputation that a light side track would be put In for horse traffic as soon as circumstances permitted. A letter was received from six ratepayers on the fiordoh Road, asking the Council to take some action In having the water course below the railway line cleaned—lt was re-
solved that the property ownera In the vicinity be given notice to clear the stream on their properties. #
