Exchange rates: Paris 50 45 francs; Stockholm 18.21 kroner; Chrlstlanla 22.57 kroner; Calcutta 22d per rupee; Montreal 457 cents; New York 398% cents. ENGLISH MARKETS.' London, June 17. In the Bradford wool tops' imarket there was silghtly better inquiry, but business was only done when favorable to buyers. New Zealand apples brought by the Port Napier were mostly in good condition, but the pears were practically worthless. The wheat market Is flat and nothing is offering. Flour Is quiet. Oats are easier. La Platas on spot 59s 6d to 60s. Peas and beans are Inactive and prices unchanged. Sugar is unchanged. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. The Department of Agriculture has received tho following cablegram, dated June 12, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London : "Butter.—Average price English butter is unchanged at £l6 2s, and tendency firmer. Irish is in smaty supply and price firmer; creamery £l4 9s to £l4 18s Bd. "Cheese—Demand for English cheese is good, and plenty offering. Fiuest clieddar £8 12s. to £9 £3. Canadian, spot £8 10s and under. Quotations c.i.f. £7 18s. Make is reported to be large and export Is increasing. "Hemp.—Manila market Is dull ond dropping. 'J' grade, February-April to AprilJune shipments, quoted at £O9 sellers; JulySeptember shipment sold £62 10s early tills week, but later down to £6O. Output January 1 to May 31, 526,000 bales, against 450,000 same period last year. Shipments to England 247,000 against 108,000. New Zealand market Is dull and depressed. Present quotations are: Spot, hlghpoints £!>B, fair £56; March-May shipment £54 and £52 re» spectlvely, sellers. Wool.—Wool sales have closed. Attendance has been good throughout, but demand poor, and large proportion offering withdrawn. Merinos have declined 25 per cent. Crossbred fine sold at reduction of 15 per cent; medium 5 per cent to 10 per cent; coarse offerings small and withdrawn at a decline of nominally 10 per cent. Average current values New Zealand crossbreds, fine 2s- 4d to 3s, medium Is lOd to 2s 4d, coarse Is 4d to Is 8d nominal. Feeling here is that owing to exceptionally large quantities marketed during the last six months, trade needed breathing space." LOAN AND MERCANTILE REPORT. The N Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd. (Hawera branch) report for the past week as follows: On Monday, at Opunake, we had a fair yarding of store cattle. We held a very successful sale of dairy herds on account of both Messrs. G. A. M. Holmes and Daniel Ratahi. We quote: Jersey dairy cows £l2 to £27 10s, other breeds £8 10s to £l6, empty heifers £5 17s 6d, wear.er heifers £2 16s to £3, steers 22s Od to 30s, bulls £5 to £6 ss. At Palmer Road, on Friday, we had a fair yarding of all classes of catt j. Bidding was a little brisk, and practically everything was disposed of before leaving the yards. Fat and forward cowo £8 12s to £ll 2s, store cows £3 16s to £6 Is, Jersey weaner heifers £5 2s, males 395, 2-year steers £6 16s, pigs (small) 355.
