PERSIA'S PERIL.

THREAT TO THE BRITISH. TASK FOR LEAGUE OF NATIONS. By T«l«graph,—Prew A«n.—Copyright. London, June 16. The Teheran correspondent of the Times states that the Bolsheviks at fiesht (150 mile's from Teheran) have proclaimed a Persian Republic and appointed commissaries, including Kutchik Khan. A manifesto has been issued, abolishing monarchy, the AngloPersian agreement, and protesting against the presence of British troops and intimating the intention to control the country towards Teheran. It is suggested that, while it is not necessary to take the Republic seriously at present, Kutchik Khan's jests often prove unpleasant to the Persian Government—Times Service. * London, June 15. Prince Firouz of Persia had a conference with the Secretary-General and the French representative of the League of Nations. It iB understood that no solution was reached. Prince Firouz declines any compromise which is not satisfactory to'the Persian Government, and considers it is for the League to show even at the present early stage its ability to deal with one of those very questions for which the League was created.—Reuter Service.

Received June 18, 12.20 a.m. London, June 16. At a public meeting of the Council of the League of Nations, held in London. Lord Curzon (British Foreign Secretary), who presided, described the correspondence exchanged between Persia and the Bolshevik Government. He considered Persia acted rightly in negotiating with the Soviet, and requested Prince Firouz to keep'the Council informed of the course of events.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. CASPIAN SEA ACTION. Received June 18,12.20 a.m. Paris, June 17. Advices from Teheran report that the Bolshevik forces which disembarked at Enzeli comprise a whole annv corps and a squadron of seaplanes. They caphired sixteen tank steamers and despatched them to Baku.—Beuter Service.
