WHAKATANE HARBOR./ By Telegraph—rress Association. Whakatane, June 16. The Whakatane Harbor Board approved a report by the engineer, Mr. Adams, containing a reference to the deep sea harbor scheme. Mr. Adams advised the board to determine its future intentions in order that the present operations might form part of a larger scheme, as he considers there is a possibility of the construction of an inside harbor to accommodate oversea vessels. The board resolved to promote an Empowering Bill to borrow £175,000. A FLAXCUTTER STABBED. Whakatane, June 16. ' At Grainger's flaxeutter's camp at Thornton on Sunday, Alexander Cameron was stabbed in the loin with a sheath knife, the wound penetrating 24 inches, and just missing a fatal wound to the kidneys. Auckland, June 16. A policeman arrested Louis von Einem at 6.25 o'clock this morning as he was getting out of a show case on the premises of Messrs. Whiteornbe and Tombs. Four fountain pens, which were valued at £7 10s, were found in his pocket, and he admitted having stolen them. A search of accused lodging discovered an assortment of goods, many of which it is alleged were stolen. They were conveyed to the station in two motor vehicles. Einem has been remanded for a week. ■AUCKLAND GAsI)ISPUTE. Wellington, June 16. In reference to a telegram from Auckland about the gas dispute, Mr. P. W. Rowley, secretary of the Labor Department, stated to-day, in an interview, that the union in question has entered into an agreement with the Gas Company under the Labor Disputes Investigation Act, which agreement has currency until June, 1!)2L He had telegraphed to the union pointing out this fact and the provisions made under the Act, and also, under the Public Utilities Claims Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act (1008), the penalties for striking, and advising careful consideration before taking action. THE MACARTHY TRUST. Wellington, June 10. ' Since the first distribution of profits from the estate of the late T. (t. Macarthy in 1903, roughly half of which gdes to the benefit of charitable and educational institutions in the Wellington district, the impressive sum of £41,222 has been distributed according to the terms of the trust. The amount available in the manner referred to for distribution as the result of operations in 1919 is £6465, or £1353 more than the preceding year. At the annual meeting of the Board of Trust yesterday, 70 applications for grants were received from charitable and educational institutions, and of that number C 3 were considered favorable.

RAILWAYMEN'S WAGES. Wellington, June 16. The Board which has been considering the E.F.C.A. section of the railway dispute concluded its deliberations to-day, and as soon as the final draft of the report has been prepared it will be handed to the Minister of Railways- Members of the Board were unanimous in their recommendations. The department is now ready to proceed with the First Division case. It will be commenced almost immediately.
