WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent ) June 15. The judges (Messrs. R. Hicks and E. Cole) have completed the judging for the acreage competition for prizes offered by Messrs Gaustad, Marlow and Co. in connection with the Taranaki Horticultural Society. They have awarded as follows: —Best acreage of swedes, M. T, Berger (Waitara), Ist; H. Andrews and F. Loveridge (Huirangi) equal, 2nd; the prize to be divided. Best half-acre mdngolds, Mr. R. J. Hodgson (Waitara), Ist; Mr. •I. B. Mabin (Onaero) 2nd. Constable Lapouple commenced three weeks' leave to-day, and is being relieved by Constable R Egan, from Aramoho. The Motunui residents are interesting themselves in the matter of raising fundi for the establishment of an Anglican Church in that district, and are holding a concert in aid of same.
The band, which has just been revived, played outside the Marble Bar on Saturday night, and attracted quite a crowd. The band and its new organiser (Mr. C. Sampson) are to be complimented on their playing. It is to be hoped they will stick together, and that the public will hear more of them.
We regret to hear of the death of Mrs. McKoy, which took place in New Plymouth. Mrs. McKoy was an old and respected resident of Waitara, and her sons will have the public's sympathy. The social and dance given by Mrs. Fairweather on Friday evening was largely attended, the artists being particularly pleasing. A lucky escape from a serious accident attended a boy named St. George on Saturday last. It appear.s the boy had just mounted his machine from the footpath and rode on-to the roadway, where ha came in contact with •Mr. S. Kennedy's car, which was passing at the time. The bicycle went in between the wheel and the bonnet of the car, whilst the lad fell under the car. It was a relief to know that the boy was not hurt in any way. The Catholic euchre party, arranged by Mrs. La Pouple, was held on Monday evening, but only seventeen tables were occupied. The winners were as follows: —Mrs. L. Sarten Ist (night-dress); Miss Potter 2nd (half-dozen cups and saucers); Mr. Bell Ist (umbrella), Mr. F. Clare 2nd (box of tea).
