A tribute to the memory of Father Holland, who did splendid service in Taranaki during the Maori war, and who died about fifteen years ago, was paid at the Eolland Hall, New Plymouth, on Sunday afternoon, when Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., presented an enlarged photo of Father Rolland. Mr. Jennings said Father Rolland came to Taranaki in 1865, and was stationed at, Patea, whan news was received at New Plymouth of hostilities breaking out agaify and four military settlers were murdered at Waihi. Father Rolland had ,to attend at that time to his parishioners betwew Patea and New Plymouth, and he had some very narrow escapes when riding between the two places. Many can remember his old broad-brim chapeau, which had bullet holes in the crown and brim, and showed the narrow escapes lit had. Father Rolland was with tha forces in the severe fighting that took place at Te Ngutu-o-te-Manu on September 7, 1868.
