PUBLIC SERVICE PAY.

A COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME.. STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. By Telefrapii,—Press Association. Wellington, June 15. Keplving to a deputation from the , st ®" d Telegraph Conference yesterday, Mr. Massey announced that the Government proposed to deal with the question of public service salaries in a comprehensive "way, and he would' endeavor to get the scheme settled before the House met. It is not only the railways we have to provide for," said Mr. Massey. "We have to provide for the post and telegraph service, for the police, and for school teachers, and the Government pioposes to ask certain officers of the public service, men of experience and ability, men such as the Public Service Commissioner, the head of the Postal Department, the head of the Railway department, and the head of the I , asury to assist the Government in rawing up what I believe will be a | satisfactory scale of payments. 1 We have no intention of keeping tie lostal Department out in any way 'or dealing with them unfairly compared with other branches of the public service. I wish to make it clear that every department will be considered by itself. What we do with the Railway Department cannot he applied to the 1 ostal Department, because the condiand duties are not the same. Our aim is to have the salaries of the public service settled, n.nd settled for some time to come. This will mean an increased burden to the taxpayer, there is no doubt, hilt I hope to be able to get the money, So far an the Railway Department ia concerned T am going to get the money bv putting up fares and freights, and, so far as the postal service is concerned, T am going to put up the rales. It i,? only fair that the people using these services -should pay.
