WIFE OR THRONE.

CHOICE OF A KING.

FUTURE OF GREECE INVOLVED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.'—Copyright. Received June 13, 5.5 p.m. London, June 11. The Paris correspondent of the Daily Express states that King Alexander of Greece announces his willingness to sacrifice the throne unless allowed to take his morganatic wife back to Athens. M. Venizelos (the Premier of Greece) is coming to Paris to discuss the possibility of establishing a Republic' in Greece. It seems impossible for Alexander to take his wife back to Athens, as a secret conclave of army officers threatened most energetic steps unless she left the palace, and this was the cause of her coming to Paris with her sister.

There are many pro-Constantine demonstrations in Greece, which is the real cause of M. Venizelos recently proclaiming martial law. In view of Alexander's announcement a Republic seems the only alternative.—Aiis.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

An Athens message says the agitation I to restore Constantine continues, but J chietly by dismissed army officers and ■ political place-hunters. [King Alexander, who is 27 years of age, succeeded to the throne on the expulsion of his father, Constantine, on June I*2, 1917, according to the terms of the ultimatum presented by the Allied Powers. His elder brother, Prince George, was excluded from the succession by the terms of the ultimntum. It was believed that Alexander was unmarried, but last month Paris newspapers revealed his marriage in 1919 to Mile. Manos, a daughter of Colonel Manos, who was for a long period attached to the Royal household of Greece. The marriage was the outcome of a romantic attachment in boyhood.]
