THREAT TO MELBOURNE. LIGHT AND POWER SERVICES, By Telegraph.—Preii Asia.—Copyright, Received June 11,11.10 p.m. Melbourne, June 11. The first phase of ithe threatened industrial upheaval was precipitated by the gas workers in the employ of the Metropolitan, Brighton, Williamstown, and Footscray companies ceasing work this morning, the engine drivers at the works stopping with them. Half an hour after the stoppage flie gas supplies began to fail. Manufacturers are falling back upon their emergency plants ' for power.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [A cable from Melbourne, published yesterday morning, stated:' The Federated Engine-Drivers' and !■ .emen's Association, and the electric light and gasworks employees, have sent an ultima" turn to tjie employers, demanding increased wages, stating that if they are not granted they will cease work ait midnight on Saturday. If the threat is carried into effect it is estimated 50,000 men will bn rendered idle the first week, as the factory engine-drivers belong to tho Association.]
