THE PRICE OF BUTTER.
BELOW COST OF PRODUCTION. By Telegraph—Press Association. • Hamilton, June 11. Replying to the official statement that the Government has done no mote than follow the' custom of recent years, Mr. GoodfeHow, manager of the New Zealand Dairy Association, states that producers took no exception to holding back a quantity of butter sufficient to supply local requirements until the coming season's make was available. At the present time there were 220,000 boxes of butter in New Zealand, torn_pared with 100,000 at this time last year. This estimated surplus had in reality been sold to the ImperiarGovernment, but the New Zealand Government intended to appropriate the extra quantity for' the purpose, of supplying the local market in competition with the new Jason's make, which would, be available in increasing quantities After August 1 nlsst: The Government ■would by this questionable means continue 1 * to keep "down the price ol Butter to a figure very much below the cqgt of production. Mr. Goodfellow quoted the prices filling in other countries, showing, that inferior butter sold in Australia to-day at 2s 3d per lb, Canada and the tJnited States' 3s to 3s 6d, and in England at 3s to 5s per lb. ■ •
