EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MBETINC. The following matters dealt with at the monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board on Wednesday were crowded out of yesterday's News:— GENERAL. Mr. 0. J. Howarth, organising teacher for the Opunake district, was granted permission, to establish his headquarters at MaiigttJiume.
It was decided to renew applications for grants for the purchase of a site [ and erection of a residence at Oarrington ftoad, and for the purchase of site and erection of a new school at Upper Mangorei. Application is to he made for a grant for the erection of a residence at Stanley Eoad. It was decided to apply to the Department for a grant for the purchase of sites and the building of residences for the Tawiiti and Vogeltown schools. The Board decided to grant the Moeatoa Hall Committee os per week as rent for the tine of tlie building while used for school,, purposes. It was decided to inform the Ackland Committee that the Board was of opinion there was no justification at present for applying for a grant for additions to the school. The action o'f a number of school committees iu closing the schools on account of influenza was approved. The senior inspector was requested to report on the application for additional accommodation at the Mo'kau school.
Mr. Insull was requested to again meet the Olmra Committee and report to the Board on the matter of bridging the stream near the school. A letter waa received from the Education Department stating that, in connection with the representations made by the- Board to the Minister with regard to the re-building of the Central School, New Plymouth, the matter would he reconsidered when the Board's proposals were received as to its programme of work for the next three years- A committee wan set up to go into the master with the architect. A number of applications for repairs, etc., to schools and residence* were referred to the architect to report upon. In reply to the Canterbury Education Board it was decided to inform them that the Taranaki Board had always regarded the teaching of agriculture in sole-teacher schools as an optional subject.
It wan resolved to ask the Egmont County Council to have notice boards placed on each side of the schools on the main road in their district, warning motorists of the proximity of schools. The question of the advisability of insuring shelter sheds was referred to the Finance Committee to report on. It was agreed to carry out alterations to the shelter-shed at Durham (school, provided the Committee contribute the sum of £lO. A grant of £4 was authorised toward the cost of a boiler for making cocoa for the children at the Wattara school-
