GENERAL BIRDWOOD.
SOUTH ISLAND TOUR. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Ashburton, Last Night, General Sir William Birdwood was welcomed by the Mayor (Mr. Galbraitli) Colonel Studholme, and Major Orr, and motored to the trotting meeting, where he witnessed a race. Later, a civic reception was held, and in the town the General received an enthusiastic greeting from a large crowd. At the visitor's request a whole holiday was granted to the school children to-morrow. After luncheon General Birdwood went south by the second express.
