SALE OF WHEAT.
CHARGES AGAINST A FIRM. ALLEGED BREACH OP . REGULATIONS. By Telejrauh—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. in the Supreme Court, before Mr. Justice Sim, to-day, A. Steven and Co. were sued by the Crown for penalties for an alleged breach of the regulars >» reßpect to sales of wheat. Mr. W. C. McGregor, K.C., appeared for the Crown, Mr. C. P Skerrett. K.C., and Mr. A. 8. -Adams for the defendants, A. 'Stevens and Co., and William Josiab Love. The statement of claim set forth that |bove is a, large shareholder and also ; managing director of the defendant company personally controlling the company* business, and personally responrible for the wholesale buying and selling of grain. The maximum price was fixed on February 25, 1919, by OrderZealand, such order remaining In force. The rate f or free wheat inferior in quality and good milling wheat was 6s 8d a bushel, and after last October the defendants sold large quantities of such wheat at prices exceeding 6s Bd, the excess prices ranging from 7s 8d to 8s 6d. 1 he-alleged offences were the sale of 339 •*" H » tcn! »««on (Auckland) ; 167 to the same firm at 8s; 336 to the same firm at 8s 3d; 367 at 8s 6d to Roach (Hastings); 345 at 8s 6d to A. S. Paterson (Wellington); 333 at 8s 6d to Birch and Co. (Wellington); 333 at 88 M to Lenry M d Co. (Wellington); *SJ ..r the Loan and Mercantile Co (Wellington) 841 at 7s 3d, and 798 at 7s Bd. A penalty of £3OO was claimed in respect of each offence. The defendants' statement admitted the sales, but mentioned that the prices included saeks. The case is proceeding.
