FOOTBALL.
THE RUGBY GAME, NORTH v. SOUTH TARANAKI. SOUTH WIN BY 12 TO 6. Weather conditions were not conducive to a brilliant exhibition of football yesterday, Ivhen the annual match between North and South Taramiki was played on the Recreation Grounds. The greasy nature of the ball made accurate handling very uncertain, nevertheless a keenly contested struggle was witnessed by the fair attendance of spectators. The game was very fast, and while play was mostly confined to the forwards, there were bouts of passing on both sides that indicated that the teams possessed some nippy backs, who would bo capable of giving an interesting display under more favorable weather conditions The game was very evenly comtested, and South wort by 12 points to 6, but; the difference in the scores by no means indicates the difference in the teams. The teams lined out as follows:
SOUTH. • (Colors.) Full-back: > Anderson. "*" Three-quarters: I Hlckey, Robertson, Wilkinson. Five-eighths: S. Cameron (Capt.) F. MeKenna, Half: Atkins. Wing Forward: O'Rorke. , j Forwards: Martin, Malone, West, Johnson, Patterson, Blrehall, Winters. NORTH. | (Red, White, and Blue.) Full-back: H. Oliver. Three-quarters: Pennlall, Colman, Coutts. Five-eighths: R. Oliver, Syke3. Half: Brown (Capt.) Wing Forward: ~ J. Taylor. Forwards: Klvell, Spurdle, King, Burkhardt, Sotte, Norgate, Spence. THE FIRST SPELL. South opened against the wind, and soon after Cameron marked,. Robertson's kick being charged down. Both sides attempted to make the game open, but the ball did not get past the flvc-ei'ghths. West shone In some line out work, and then the North forwards took a hand, hut Hickey saved. Atkin shot the ball to Cameron, who centred, but I'cnnlal was able to line. Play was now up and down field, both sets of forwards working very hard until a kick by Pennlall found touch at half-way. Later a pretty piece of play followed. It. Oliver, beat his man, transferred to Sykes, who cut In and handed to Colman, and the Clifton player scored a nice tTy. His attempt to convert failed. North 3 South ». 8 Cameron then started a movement that his forwards carried on, but H. Oliver picked the ball from their feet and lined. The Northern backs were throwing the ball about well, but from a line out West shot the ball to Atkins, who got close to the line and then transferred to Blrehall, who equalised the scores. Atkins failed to goal. North 3 South 3
For the next few moments play was confined to tho forwards, each side taking a hand at attack, and being cheeked by line kicking. Taylor here retired with an injured thumb, and was replaced by Smith. Atkins, Cameron and McKenna carried out a dangerous Southern back move, but a free kick saved. The Southerners wero now throwing the bail, about well, the leather passing from Atkins, Cameron, McKenna, Robertson, to Wilkinson, who failed to take. Out came tho bail on the other wing, and aftor Hickey had been collared on the lino, McKenna was nearly over. Then Atkins passed to Cameron, who handed on to Hickey, and the Waimate wing beating Coutts, scored In the corner. Malone failed to .goal. South 6 North 3 Soffe, Kivell, Norgate, King and Co. brought play to the Southern twenty-five, where Sykes marked, but H. Oliver's kick kept low. A willing Northern rush had Anderson in trouble, but a speculator saved, and halftime was then called. THE SECOND SPELL. In the second spell, SrcSweeney replaced Anderson at full-back for the South, and Coutts and Sykes exchanged places In the Northern team. From the start Cameron mado a great opening, and the ball travelled via Atkins to McKenna, who lost It on the lino, a force resulting. North forwards carried It back to half-way, where -a little later Coutts transferred to Penniall, who utreaked over tho line. H. Oliver's kick went wide. North 0 South G Play now became very fast. Back came the Southerners, and passing bouts by their backs on two occasions nearly ended In scores, Wilkinson being collared by Burkhardt, and Robertson by Colman, both being temporarily put out of action. Saveral scrums took place under the Northern goal, the Northerners having to solidly defend until Penniall and Coutts lined at half-way. R. Oliver made a nice opening. Wiklnson, however, intercepted, but wa9 penalised for off-side. Sfulling by McSweeney let the local forwards attack, but Cameron came round and saved. West, by a fine line ldck, removed play to half-way, but the locals soon had It back again, and a passing nish by Brown, R. Oliver, and Sykes, who kicked and followed up fast, saw him nearly over. Prom a scrum the Southerners cleared, and a fine rush was spoilt by a pass forward. H. Oliver slipped when matters looked dangerous, but Colman saved, and then Smith, Kivell, Norgate, Burkhardt and Co. headed a hefty rush that found McSweeney wanting, and Wllklnsop. forced. The Northerners were making matters willing, but Cameron broke away, and soon the Southerners were hard at It. McKenna was well collared by Colman, and Hickey was nearly over, but the Northerners tackled well, uritil from a scramble, Cameron scored. He failed to convert. South 9 North ..'. „ 6 North pressed hard, and Sykes, kicking high, McSweoney was in trouble. Kivell secured and streaked for the line, but was crowded before he could pass to Penniall, who was handy, and a chance went. Colman had a chance to equalise scores for a free kick, but failed. Then Cameron put the issue beyond doubt by imaking a fine opening and transferring to Robertson, who streaked for tho line, with Winters in attendance. When blocked he transferred to the latter, who again handed the ball back, and Robertson, with Penniall close up, scored the fourth try. He failed to, convert, and the game ended:— South 12 North g Mr. P. Roberts was referee. , THE CURTAIN RAISER. CLIFTON (5) v. STAR (3).
