TEACHERS' WINTER SCHOOL.

REPORT OF DIRECTOR OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION. In his report to the Taranaki Education Board yesterday, thq Director of Technical Education reported on the winter classes recently held in New Plymouth for teachers, as follows: The school opened on May 24th with an attendance of 61, which number increased in the second week to 87. TUa Minister of Education visited the Bchool on May 27th, n nd-addressed 1 the teachers. Ho also expressed pleasure at. the good work that was being-done-by the Board in this direction. The rolls of tlie various classes are Ss follow":—'School Method 30, Dairy Science "C" 16, Hygiene "D" 58, Homo Science 10, English"i2B,*Maithematics (Junior) 88, Mathematics (Senior) 7, Agriculture 40, Drawing (Free., Geom, and B.B.) 64, Physical Drill 64, Vocal Music 74. The good work that has been done should not be allowed to go back, and it is suggested "that the instructors keep in touch with the teachers by correspondence, and keep the work up to concert pitch, by setting and correcting papers. The expense to the Board would be little, and the amount of good done would bs very great. The Director Stated he had calculated the approximate amount of capitation earned by the winter school at £lO3, and submitted the following statement in connection therewith: —• Income: Orant £250, capitation £lO*J, balance from 1819 £74; total, £427. Expenses: Salaries 1920, £7O 17s 6d; salaries 1010, £4B; correspondence, £00; balance, £230 2s 6d; total, £427. It was suggested that; the above balance should be distributed as far as possible among the teachers for coach fares, and an allowance towards their board. Satisfaction at tho keen, interest taken by the teachers in these classes was expressed by members of the Board; and it was suggested that the classes should bo further fostered in succeeding year*. It was decided to adopt the recommendation of the senior inspector tliafea.* teacher attending, the classes should toprovided with a certificate. , ''■ ■'
