MONTHLY MEETING. \ The ordinary meeting of tho Kginont County s Council was held at Opunnku yesterday. I'resent: Crs. W. 11. Wright (chulruiuii), A. B. Coffin, J. Young, T. 11. H. Sinclair, W. C. Green, S. Forsyth, M. O'Brien, It. C. Wataon, and S, Campbell. ~ ENGINEER'S REPORT The engineer reported:— Oeo Riding (Northern).—A fair amount of patching has been dono to the Eltham Road, I and two new two feet diameter pipe culverts have been put in at the crossing In front of \ tho To Kir! Public Hall. The water-tables have j been cleaned out all a lows the upper and | ■ lower Oeo Road. Patching lias been done ( to the Waitlno Road ut various places, but w» I have no more broken metal for this worlt, ana the pit gravel Is no good, Oeo Riding (Southern).—Contract No, 354 Was completed In tho early part of the month, the contractor having delivered 510 eu)lc yards of crushed river bed boulder stone, and BO yards screenings which were put down on 38% chains on the Main South Road between Nopesa Road and Mr. R. Lamble's gate, the cost per yard for labor, fuel, etc., being a fraction over 3s lOd, and the cost per yard Including metal and screenings 18s o%d, the total cost being £576 16s, or £l4 19s 7%d per chain. Whilst waiting for boulder stone on the above contract, opportunity was taken to scarify and roll in the /surface of the hill west of the Oeo River. Tho Nopera and Patiki Roads have been patched for their entire lengths. Twenty hardwood blocks have been delivered for repairs to the Ourl bridge on the Main South Road, which work will be done by driver Brlghouse, assisted by tho surfaceman. Opua Riding (Southern).—A good bit of time has been spent on the Ihala Road on the work of patching, water-tabling, and other works to keep the surf" -, o water off the centre of the road which is mostly low. An offer has leen made by certain settlors on this road to provide free teams with drivers for the purpose of carting metal to Feaver<s Hill from a bill higher up the road If the Council will get and spread the metal. A lot could be said In favor of lowering the top of the last mentioned hill which is all metal and about eight or ten chains of Fearer's Hill 19 certainly In n had condition. Opua Elding (Northern).—Over a week's work ha 3 been put In on the Arawhata Rpad cleaning out water-tables and patching, and two days have been put In on the Opua Road patching and cleaning out a culvert, etc. One set Of pipes, various sines have been made at tlio yard. Rahotu Riding (Southern).— Early in the month No. 2 crushing plant was moved from Cape Road to the Main South Road for contract 374, where 80 cubic yards of stone taken from tho cutting north of the Waltotara bridge were put through and laid down on the top of Layman's Hill for a distance of, eight chains, a further eight chains towards the bridge being scarified and rolled in again without metal, tho total cost of the work Including the contractor's price being £57 3s or £3 lis 5d per chain. From here the - crushing plant was sent In for the season for repairs, but the "Garrett" roller was re- • talned for scarifying, reforming, and rolling
In the Main South Road, commencing at the Oaoltl bridge and working northwards, where ,a length of over 90 chains has already been so treated. The water-taHes have been cleaned out at places where the refoimlng Is In progress A day's patching has been done to the I'lintu Road. A line of 2ft diameter pipes have been put In at the top end of the Upper Klna Road to re- i place an old wooden culvert which had collapsed. The new formation work on the Lower' Klna Road has been delayed by the wet weather, It has been deemed advisable to fonm the whole length of road required to be used with the money available In place of forming a short length and using metal on that only. Rahotu Riding (Northern) .—No. 2 crushing plant was moved to Cape Road for contract 363 at the beginning of the month, and 208 cubic yards of metal was received from the contractors, 200 yards of which were laid down on 32 chains of the road towards the lower end at a rate of 6V4 yards per chain, and at a cost for labor, fuel, etc., of 3s per yard and lis per yard including the metal, total cost per chain £5 3s 9d. Watertabling has been done on the Main South Road between the Parlhaka Road and the YVailekaure Bridge. The approach to the Cape Road which was very tow at the sides, and rather dangerous has been filled In with good material from a cutting on the main road close • by. I have again examined carefully (he Walwernnul Bridge on the Main South Road, at Worea, and am of opinion therfe has-been a. slight movement since my previous inspection. I have had all the cracks cleaned out and pointed up smoothly with cement, and will take rubbings of any cracks that may show In the futyro, also test the top of the parapet at the centre for further deflection.
The Council had applications from several, settlers for permission to cart firewood, etc., over the by-roads during the winter months. —After discussion the Council decided that the by-laws be adhered to as regards heavy traffic. ' ■ i " ••-; the Wnlmate County Council In connection with, a settlement in regard to the portion recently merged from the Efrmont County, was read.—The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, complimented Mr. Rogers on the excellent way In which the report had been brought forward. This was seconded by Cr. Campbell and carried. A ftamal resolution wa3 passed striking the rat» for the ensuing year. Tosland Bros., Corklll and Petty, drew attention to the deporable state of the drain along the Watlno Road. They were agreeable to pay paft of the cost of clearing the drain.—The engineer wa3 instructed to carry out the work.
