NEW PLYMOUTH WINTER SHOW.
OPENS THIS AFTERNOON./ ! AN ATTRACTIVE EXHIBITION. ■ The Coronation Hall, New Plymouth, presented a very animated scene JHUfcday and last night, when the final tfr rangements were being made iu cotfwetion with the New Plymouth Winter Show, which opens to-day. All that is required to make a successful Show is favorable weather conditions,, for the entries in all classes have exceeded the most sanguine expectations and given the stewards and officials a difficult task to accommodate them all. However, they have got through their task well, and everything should be in readiness for-the official opening of the Show, which .will be performed by the Minister of Agriculture (Hon; W. Nosworthy) at 2 p.m. t<h day.
Tho poultry and pigeon classes hive filled well, more especially in Leghorns, where there are no less than 1(1 entries in some' classes. The competition will prove very keen indeed, as the leading breeders from north and south Taranaki have forwarded entries. In the pigeon classes it is very doubtful if ever again an opportunity will be afforded the public of viewing such a mngnificenfc exhibition. The special attraction on this occasion is the competition for the ColumbarUw Peace trophy, which is valued at £3O, to. he competed for by owls, turbits, and Ori-' entsl Frills. The leading breeders* of the North Island have entered, which will make this particular feature of the Show especially attractive. Th"» classes for homing pigeons are also well filled.
Home industries hnvfi attracted ' exhibitors from as far afield as Hawke'a Bay, the result being that there is not one ,weak class in the whole section. The winners -will therefore have the satisfaction of knowing that their victory was by no means a hollow - one. The needlework classes are the strongest that have ever yet been seen in 'the history of the society. The school cooking classes have also filled well, no less than 33 entries having been received, for scones in Standard ,6. The points trophy is to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals.
The number of trades displays is larger than, usual, every inch of space being occupied. It wa3 found impossible ,to nccede to all the applications for shape in this class, and next year the committee will have to take into serious consideration the provision of additional space.
The arrangements for luncheon, supper, and afternoon tea arc again in the hands of an enthusiastic committee of ladies, who will also conduct a produce stall, the proceeds of which will go towards augmenting the funds of the society.
By way of encouraging a large attendance the price of admission has been fixed at the very moderate sum of Is for adults and 6d for children urider 12 years.
The show will be continued each day and evening until Saturday Wight, and to add to the enjoyment an orchestra has been engaged to render selections each evening. i
