A meeting was held at the Fire Brigade station last night for the purpose of forming' a sports and pastimes club. Mr. A. Nelson was voted to the chair, and there was an attendance of about twenty. * Mr. P. Skoglund expressed regret that the registration of the Taranaki Boxing Association, which for several years had Stratford as its centre, had been cancelled. However, there was no reason why a club under the name of the Sports and Pastimes Club should not be formed, and probably in the near future an amalgamation of the various clubs would be arranged and the centre finally decided upon. - He moved that a club be formed in the district. The motion was seconded by Mr. R. Foley and carried unanimouslyThe following officers were then elected:—Patron, Mr. R. Masters, M.P.; president, his Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan); vice-presidents, Rev. C. W. Howard and Mr. A. W. Reid; committee, Messrs J. S. Rowe, F. D. flaffaney, W. R. Foley, F. Foley, C. Gray, and 0. K Jago; secretary and treasurer, Mr. A. J. King (pro tern); auditor, Mr. W. Power.
The annual subscription was fixed at one guinea for adults and half-a-guinea for juniors.
It was reported that some material belonging to the defunct association was available and could be taken over by the club. Ifc wan decided to commence gymnastic classes as soon as possible. GENERAL. There was a good attendance at the meeting of the Stratford branch of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders' Association, when an interesting address, entitled "Increasing the Productivity of the Soil," was delivered by Mr. J. B. Richards, chairman of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce. Mr. F. Ranford occupied the chair.
The annual meeting of the Stratford Electoral Prohibition league, whieii was arranged to be held this afternoon, was postponed until the 19th inst., owing to the small attendance. The weather conditions in Stratford to-day have been very unsatisfactory, rain falling heavily most of the day. Despite these conditions, however, a fairly large number of country people came to the town.
