We hare been taking you into our confidence regarding our methods, and before telling you how we buy and the reason for our having available such a large and well assorted stock, despite the great shortage everywhere else, we would like to say a word or two in explanation of the difference between tailor-made clothes and factory (or "slop") clothes.
This is very necessary, for in the Arbitration Court recently one witness —of course a rival — so far allowed prejudice or antagonism to over-ride his judgment as to allege that our shops were conducted ou the factory system. This statement is entirely wrong. The Tailors' Award clearly states that all suits sold as "tailor-made" must be made on the premises where the order is taken, and wages and conditions of working set out in the Award are complied with. "Factory" work is mostly machine work. A "factory" staff consists of from 4 to 6 machinists to one hand worker. Our work only requires 15 per cent' of machinists. In other words, we have 0 hand workers to one machinist. The reason why we can sell our suits, etc., at such low prices is by organisation and specialisation. We pay our employees far better wages than provided for in the Award, for the same reason. We aim at efficiency in the shop and quality in the output. We allow nothing but the best to go out of our shops. Experience shows it pays to give customers a "square deal." They stick to us and advertise us among their friends. That is why our business grows so lyTHE MODERN TAILORS, L TD "BESLEY'S"' Stratford New Plymouth.
