Concluding day at Dunedln. Great .Northern Steeplechase to-day. The good thing. Lochella, duly landed on Thursday. 80-Peep won with her fnoutii open at Otakl. Thrace was sold recently to Mr. Geo. Clreen, of Epsom. The Digger paid a surprisingly good price in the Maiden at Otakl. Lochella is certain to start a hot order In the Northern Steeples to-day, and will carry this scribe's "dollar." They put it on Depredation hot and strong in the Raukawa Cup, but after a close finish had to be content with, getting their coin back for second place. All llarton were on Ngata at Ellerslie on Thursday, and the Maniapoto gelding retDmed a great dividend. Ngata recently won at Eltham. Those Auckland kill-joys who were busy backing up the Jockeys' Association must now be very sorry that they interfered. The tramway strike will hurt more kill-joys than it will "sports." The latter prefer motor cars, and are not afraid to pay for ihelr joy-rldlng! Talking of joy-riding, Hector Gray can get Bpeed ocit of motor csts just as well as out of racehorses. The other day he rushed through Bulls at umpteen miles an hour, and a shocked magistrate ordered Hector to rontrlbuto £5 to the Bulls Town Board' 3 finances.

Bunting was in the boom for the Brisbane Cup, Tun on June 8, but failed to run into a place. He was aaked to give the winner, golden Sunset, lOibs. Bookmaking, away from the course, in Kenlucky (U.S.A.) is punishable with* twelve months in "the cooler." The kill-sports in this J>ominlon would like to introduco a similar law, and Bill Massey seems to te on their side, in spite of the everyday overwhelming proof that racing and betting is getting more popular. It is time the "sports" woke up I Te Miro, by Spalpeen—Bell Crispin, recently won a couple of races in Australia, and another ex-New Zealander to score over there was Determination, a half-brother (by AN Black) to that good horse Reputation. They put a parcel on Punka in the RauUawa Cup on Thursday, and left it there. This mare is over-rated, and what is more, pver-raced. x A good spoil would do her good, and her, owner's pocket as -well 1 Biplane was produced at Roselfm the other day, and finisher*, fifth in a field of eight Being still on the- 4 burly side his showing rave promise of his to "come back." Lochella has been entered for the Y.RC. Grand National Hurdle Rate, run over three Wiles, but it Is hardly likely that he will be sent across to clean 'eim up this year. Omahu's decisive defeat in the Great Northern Hurdle Race was a disappointment to his party, but he should make amends before the meeting closes. A shorter distance should suit him better.

Lord Najjar, who cost Mr. W. E. Kemball lOOgns last year, and who won at Havvera and at Wanganui over short courses, Is thus summed up by a Sydney writer: "Lord Najjar Is particularly (rood in inilo and a half and milo and throe-quarter races, and shines on i heavy track."

Transport difficulties prevented Luke and Wiroltlno from competing at Dunedin, but on the o'hor hand was Instrumental In keeping Master Strowan and Gang 'Awa In the 'South, with satisfactory results all round. Sunart, and ono or two lesser lights were debarred from racing at Otakl, but fields at the latter place were good all round, and racing Interesting.

Reports from Haivke's Bay are to the effect that Mr. J5. Joll's three coming two-year-olds are shaping nicely in Sid Reid's hands, and will bo brought across to Hawera as soon as new quarters are completed. One of the number, Still Sea, aft aptly-named cost by Absurd—Sea Spray, Is spoken or as a beauty, !The others, which also show promise are Goid Steel, by Martian—Snowst(|U, snil Danger Konc. *l\v Martian—Crimson Rose.

The trams took the crowds out to filierstie right enough on Thursday, but the four o'clock stoppage caused some consternation nt the finish. The motors must have done groat business, but many had to make the return journey per boot. One optimist amongst the pedestrians consoled himself that he would have had to walk anyhow! He didn't have the tram fare left. Prodigal ran his best race to" date when he followed Willy's Knight homo in the Birthday Welter at Otaki on Thursday. * The third horse, Admiration, cost the public a ton of good money. The dogs were barking nenerallsslmn and Depreciation yesterday, and Sea Fount and Paoanul were also in the boom. Ago seems no limit to steeplechase riding In the Old Country. Captain Thomas DallasYorke, a nonagenarian follows the hounds in Emrland, and is not afraid to take on the stlffest post and Tails, while in the Irish Orand National Steeplechase, run In April, Mr. H. Beasley, 68 years of age, and his son both had mounts.' "Old Man" Bensley won the King's Cup. 3 miles the same afternoon. Ngakanul's record reads like an "out size" in hard luck stories. His last six starts have resulted in five seconds and a dead-heat for first place. It is time he broke it. The loud rumbling sound noticed on Thursday evening was probably caused by the bookmakers shalcing in their shoes when the news filtered through that. Lochella had landed the Great Northern Hurdles. If Lochella wins again to-day many of .the layers will 40 la th« ftttfstrSj or go to wotk or;
