Mr. .T, H. Quilliam, who has been on visit to England and Europe, is expected] to reach New Plymouth on Tuesdav next.

The West End School Committee last night decided to nominate Mr. It. J. Deare for the vacancy on the Education Board causced by the retirement of Mr. EI. H. Grayling. Messrs. M. Frascr, P. ,T. Hill, and Holdeti, who represented the Taranaki Hospital Board at the conference in Wellington this week, returned to New Plymouth by the mail train last night.The Rev. A. H. Collins, formerly of Adelaide, arrived at New Plymouth from Wellington this week to assume the pastorate of the New Plymouth Baptist Church. He.will commence his ministry to-morrow. '

The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. H. Nosworthy, will open the annual Winter Show of the Tnranaki Agricultural Society at New Plymouth at 2 o'clock next Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Lloyd George, Mr. Balfour, the Speaker, and numerous members of Parliament of all parties, attended the wedding of Mr. Bonar. Law's daughter to General Sykes, who has doue much service in Persia, Mr. G. V. Shannon, Government Customs expert (retired) and a prominent settler in the Waituna district, died on Friday morning (reports a Feilding telegram). His wife predeceased him by six years. Ho leaves a large grown-up family. The death occurred at the Auckland Hospital yesterday of Major George Melville Burlinson, late superintendent of the Wernroa training farm, in his 66th year (says a telegram from Auckland). Prior to going to Weraroa the deceased ttas a't the Caversham industrial school, Dunedin.

Mr. C. D. McGiven of the Chief Post Office, New Plymouth, was recently the recipient of a presentation of a silver teapot on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The Chief Postmaster, in making the presentation, conveyed the best wishes of the staff for his future happiness'.

Captain Alli»n arrives in New Plymouth by mail train this evening, baring had a successful tour, extending over three months, on behalf of the "Young Helpers' League" in connection with Dr. Barnardo's Homes. At the end of June Captain Allen will resume his elocutionary recitals in the Wellington and Hawke's Bay districts in the interests of the same organisation.
