A STOCK ROUTE.
CLIFTON COUNTY PROPOSAL. WHITE OLIFFS TUNNEL. 'WW A letter was before the Clifton County Council yesterday from the Taranaki Farmers' Meat Company, desiring thai the Council's engineer should prepare an estimate of a .White Cliffs tunnel, or alternative proposals, in order to make a good stock 'toad connecting with the Clifton road and the White Cliffs beach. Cr. Jones asked if they sunk the concrete in the papa formation below the surface of the water could it be made safe. The engineer said he would go up there and take levels, but apart from the entrance a good deal of work was necessary insidfe the tunnel, which required re-lining with hardwood timber. Cr. Foreman thought if they went in for this they would probably find that bridges and roads near the locality would require attention. Cr. Pennington asked if the Mokau County Council was prepared to bear part of the cost. The Clerk replied that the Mokau County had not replied to a previous letter on the question. The engineer stated that four or five years ago he estimated the cost of the tunnel at £4OO, but they could not look at it now. The chairman stated that there was a good deal of traffic over Mount Messenger. He suggested that they should get the estimates completed, and then the meat buyers and local bodies interested Blight appoint delegate* and a;-
