Nineteen started in the Derby. O'Neill rode Spion Kop, who won by two lengths The third horse was a length and a half away, Sarchedon was fourth. Tetratena was beaten at Tattenham Corner. Time, 2/34 4-s—a record. Allenby broke a blood vessel. The King and Queen and Princess Mary went in a special train to Epsom, with fifty specially invited guests. They had a great reception on the racecourse. It is estimated a quarter of a million people were present. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. THE HUMAN TIDE NIGHT WAIT ON THE DOWNS. Received June 3, 9 p.m. London, June 2. The human tide began to flow towards Epsom in the early hours of the morning. At dawn there were hundreds of camp fires on the downs, where ten thousand spent the night in the open. The weather was glorious, and merry thousands trudged fifteen miles from London, while the various railway termini were filled with surging crowds. About one in twenty of every vehicle going to Epsom was horse-drawn. The Toad presented a wonderful sight, for this was regarded as the greatest Derby day in history. Fully half a million bottles of beer, ten thousand pounds of meat, tons of ham, and other food supplies were requisitioned for catering by the booths.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
