A warning in respect to the inflation of land values was uttered by Mr. J. GHarkness, in addressing a conference of the North Auckland dairy companies. He stated that the enormous increase in land values .during the Inst five or six years was regarded with concern by a majority of thoughtful people. Dairying land in Taranaki was realising from £175 to £2OO an acre. AH he could say was, "God help the man who had taken up land at £2OO an acre!" Ho contended that the man with a little capital should be able to take up a section of land at such a price that lie could make the land his own, free of encumbrance, in fifteen or sixteen years. This, he said, could not be done on land at present prices. The high price of woollen goods in Now Zealand was attributed by a delegate at the Auckland provincial conference of the Farmers' Union to "the fact that the New Zealand woollen mills could sell their output for export at fabulous prices." The UnderSecretary of Industries and Commerce stated that this explanation was not correct. The high price of raw wool was due to the export value, and the local factories had to pay this price. Hut woollen goods, save in exceptional cases, were not being exported from the Dominion at all. The factories had been unable to keep pare with the demand within the Dominion and they had no surplus for export.
