A protest against the action of Magistrates in ordering undesirable characters to leave the cities and go to country districts was embodied in a remit adopted by the Auckland farmers' conference, just concluded. The remit pointed out that such characters are a menace to country settlers and shiuld lie committed for reformative treatment—Star. A big drop in the cost of cotton is anticipated at an early date (writes a Wellington correspondent). Commercial houses have been advised to act with caution. The only attraction in the way of sports was the ladies' hockey tournament, which took place at Pukekura Park between nine teams from various districts in the province. A good crowd of spectators followed the contests keenly. Last night the local territorials held their second annual military ball in the Coronation Hall, the proceedings being thoroughly successful. "The suggestion that there should be some measure of superannuation for nurses meets with my hearty approval and support," remarked the Minister of Public Health (Hon. C. J. Parr) before the conference of hospital boards at Wellington. Ho added that he could see some practical difficulties in the way of establishing such a system, but these were not insurmountable.
