SYDNEY DEPORTATION CASE.
To the Editor. Sir,—l was sorry to note, in your reference to the cabled report of the Father Jerger affair In Sydney, that you applied the offensive term "Romanist" to presumably a member of one of the chief divisions of Morothelstlc belief. In no logical way can the word ■ "Romanist" be applied to the wide and multiform communion of which Cardinal Newman speaks, and the terra Is generally now applied only in an abusive sense, and even then its use is almost confined to gentlemen from the neighborhood of Portadown. "Roman Catholic" is allowable In a descriptive sense, and even "Roman" Is not objected to when defining the special origin of the Catholic body of which the Bishop of Rowe is head, but "Romanist," '/Papist." "Baplshte," might well be left for the exclusive use of thoso ardent but misguided sectories who prefer abuse to civility and goodwill.—l aim, etc., CIVIC ROMANUS SUM.
