[Stratford Representative: W. I. Wilson, Broadway North. Telephone 338.] ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. June 1. The annual meeting of the Stratford Acclimatisation Society was held last evening-, the president, Mr. A. W. Budge, occupying the chair. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted, the chairman remarking that the cr. balance for the year was only £55 15s Id, as compared with £B4 4a 4d the previous year. Shooting licenses showed a slight increase but there was a small falling off in regard to fishing licenses. The report of tbe delegates to the conference of Taranaki Societies (which has already been published) was presented, and the chairman moved its adoption. Mr. H. Campbell, in seconding, said he had heard that the reason the Stratford Society did not join in the proposal put forth by Hawera, was due to a lack of funds, and for this reason they had been criticisedjover their action. The chairman said that the Hawera Society was not justified in its criticism. A combination on a proper basis would be beneficial to all. Mr. Kirkwood said he was hopeful that an amalgamation might yet be arranged. After further discussion it was decided to inform the Hawera and New Plymouth Societies that the Stratford Society was desirous of convening a conference regarding amalgamation at a place to be arranged; further matters arising in this connection to be dealt with by its delegates (Messrs. Walsh and Kirkwood). The following officers were elected: — President, Mr. A. W. Budge (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs W. P. Kirkwood (re-elected) and J. S. Lyons; honorary secretary, Mr. K. F. Harkness (reelected) ; auditor, Mr. A. Coleman (reelected) ; council, Messrs. C. Massey, P. Whittle, H. E. Abraham, L. Riera, H. Campbell, W. J. Morrison, P. Hunter, C. B. Walsh and J. T. Martin. . Several speakers pafd a tribute to tli l ' work of the curator (Miss Jones), and it was decided to vote her a bonusof £5 and to forward her a letter of appreciation. It was decided that the matter of procuring stubble quail or pheasants for stocking purposes should be considered by the society. Regarding the procuring of snipe, the chairman stated that several efforts had been made to import snipe to New Zealand, but they had failed. It was decided to procure 50,000 trout ova, and, if circumstances permitted, to increase the number. GENERAL. A happy gathering of boys and girls took place in the Parish Hall last evening, being the first of a series of meetings which are being arranged for young people. The Revs. C. W. Howard, J. W. McKenzie, and L. B. Neale delivered short addresses. After a lively discussion amongst the boys and girls, it was decided to name the society the Stratford Boys' and Girls' Improvement Association, and !)4 members were enrolled in the room. It was decided to hold meetings every Monday evening, and attractive programmes are to be arranged. The vital statistics for Stratford for the month of May are as follows: — Births 3,1, deaths 9, marriages 8. The nlirnber of marriages is said to be higher than the number registered for any one month for some years past. Eleven applications have been received by the Stratford Borough Council for the position of engineer. A meeting of delegates from the Stratford, Park, and Methodist tennis clubs was held last night to consider the suggestion that a combination of tennis players in Stratford should be secured. Mr. H. E. Lawrence presided, and about twelve players were present. It was decided to approach the Strafford Borough Council with a view to having permanent tennis courts laid down on one of the borough reserves, and to suggest that six courts be provided, with sufficient space for extension. Messrs. Rutherfurd, Lawrence, Neale, Boon, Jamieson and McKay were appointed delegates to wait on the Borough Council in regard to the matter. It was also decided to apply to the Sports Protection League' for assistance with which to carry out the scheme. A committee has been set up to arrange a social function in recognition of the services rendered to the Stratford electorate by Mr. J. B. Hine during his period as member of Parliament. At a general meeting of the shareholders of the Tariki Dairy Company yesterday, .presided over by Mr. W. V. Harkness (chairman of directors); it was decided to instal a butter-making plant : in the Tariki factory in readiness for the i coming season, so that the company may be in a position, to manufacture butter or i cheese.
WEDDINGS. CLEMOW—HINE. A choral wedding was celebrated at the English Church, Toko, yesterday morning, on the occasion of the marriage of Mr. P. C. Clemow, eldest son of Mr. J. B. Clemow, Opunake Road, to Miss Dorothy, second daughter of Major and Mrs. J. B. Hine, Toko. There was a large gathering. The bride, who was given away by her father, was attired in cream crepe d; chine, and was attended by Misses Marjorie Hine and Franeie Clemow, as bridesmaids, who wore jade and peach net dresses with hats to match. Mr. Jack Clemow was best man, and Mr. Charlie , Clemow groomsman. The Rev. C. W. Howrrd officiated. Later there was a reception at the residence of the bride's parents, a number of guests attending from all parts of the district. Numerous wedding , gifts were received, and also telegrams conveying good wishes. Toasts were proposed by Revs. Howard and Neale, the. latter especially referring to Major Hine's work at'the front during the speaker's sojourn there. The best man, the bridegroom, and Major Hine suitably responded. Mr. and Mrs. Clemow left for the North during,the afternoon. BROWN—O'SULLIVAN. At the Catholic Church', Stratford, yesterday morning, the Rev. Father Maples officiating, the marriage took place of Mr. John Brown, of Cardiff, and Miss Julia Mary, daughter of Mr. Eugene O'Sullivan The best man was the bride's brother, Mr. Arthur M. O'Sullivan, and the bridesmaid was her sister, Miss MarguerC. O'Sullivan.
