A cable from Melbourne reports the death of Mr. Melhuish, financial editor of the Melbourne Argus. Mr. J. W. TiJ)ba, headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, last week entered upon his thirty-sixth year of service in tho school. The sudden death occurred at Petonc on Monday of Mr. John tiilmour, au old resident of Petolie.' His death was due to heart failure. Mr. S. B. Hall, factory manager at Okato, leaves this morning to attend a conference of factory managers at Hamilton. Mr. A. L. Tressider, of Napier, and formerly of New Plymouth, has been appointed relieving oilicer in charge at the I'almerstoir .North Magistrate's Court. Mr. A. Robertson, secretary of 'the Ilawera Bowling Club, was presented on Monday evening with a travelling bag as an expression of the local bowlers' esteem and goodwill. Mr. D. Penman, who has restgneo the position of manager of the New Plymouth office of the Northern Steam S'-.ip Company, and who goes into business in Auckland, left New* Plymouth by the Karawa last night. Mr. C. J. Reakes, head of the Agricultural Department, has been appointed the first Commissioner to represent New Zealand in the administration of the Nauru phosphate production and supply. He will take charge of the business during the initial stages only—Press Association. Mr. Galbraith, manager of the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Shipping Company, has resigned. He will bo succeeded by Mr. R. Cameron, of the Tokomaru Bay office. The tatter's position will be filled by Mr. P. R. Fordham. Mr. Galbraith has accepted a position with Messrs. J. Mill and Co. Mr. T. R. Bayes, shipping manager of Messrs. Murray Roberts, Co., Ltd. (Wellington), was on Saturday made a presentation by the members of the staff on the occasion of his proceeding to Havvera, where he will have control of the company's branch. The shipping clerks connected with. overseas shipping, together with the Marine Department's surveyors, also made a presentation to Mr. Bayes. Mr. Robert G. Thomson, a well known and highly-respected journalist, who has been a member , of the Hansard statf for the last twenty years, died at Dannevirke on Sunday. He had been in poor health for some time, and had gone to Danhevirke to pay a visit to his sisterTho late Mr, Thomson, who was universally esteemed, leaves a widow and a son, who is on the staff of the Public Trust Office, Wellington. The Timaru Borough Council on Monday night, from 32 applicants, appointed Mr. CI. I l '. Wilson, late electrical engineer to the Hamilton borough, to the position of borough electrical engineer, and Mr. W. A. Mowat, formerly of the Navy, to the- position of power-house engineer. There were S3 applicants for this position. Colonel Hunter, who had charge of the dental service of the NeW Zealand (expeditionary Force, has been appointed director of the dental department being established for giving free dental examination and treatment to school children (says a telegram from Wellington). The appointment of Colonel Hunter was first made some time ago, but as complaints were made by other members of the profession about the position being given to him without competition being invited, he resigned.
