Acting on the motto "strike when the dinner's hot," the waitresses in two restaurant;? in Auckland one day last week struck work when the clock struck twelve. The union point of view was explained later by the-secretary of the Hotel and Restaurant Workers' Union, who stated thj.t, officially the strike was not a strike at all so far as the union was concerned. The girls concerned were not all members of the union. They had asked for a. rise in wages, and as the request bad not been granted 011 a specified date, they had walked out without consulting 1110. union officials. They had afterwards spoken to him, and he had advised them (hat their action could not be backed up by the union. The secretary added that he had recently had to iutervone to prevent a similar incident at Eotorua, just on the eve of the Prince's visit.
