STRATFORD.
[Stratford Representative: W. J. Wilson, Broadway Novth. Telephone 338.] ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY. ANNUAL MEETING, May 31. The delegates to the Acclimatisation Conference (Messrs- Kirkwood and Walsh) reported having attended the conference called to discuss amalgamation between the Hawera, Stratford, and New Plymouth Societies, to pool funds and establish one big hatchery for fish and game. Regret was expressed that a spirit of commercialism was introduced, the Hawera delegates frankly stating that what was wanted was that StratforiJ and New Plymouth should become customers to the Hawera Society. The failure of the amalgamation scheme would be a distinct and regrettable loss to fishermen and sportsmen in the province. The executive reported a satisfactory year's operation?. As was the case with the pheasants, the quail were gradually disappearing, except in the outback bush country, and the question of importing would have to be considered. One fisherman reported landing a 121b brown trout; 100,000 ova had been hatched. Regret was expressed at the prevalence of poaching, which needed checking.
