LOCAL AND GENERAL.

By the will of Mr. L. Sehmid, late of Auroa, who died at Ngaere on Tuesday last, Dr. Barnado's Homes benefit to the extent of £2OO. Notice of motion lias been given by Cr. W. Luxford to discuss at the next meeting of the Wanganui Borough Council that the Town Clerk bo appointed General Manager of Borough affairs. Regarding the coastal steamer Aorere, which was recently stranded on the Rangitikei beach, the owners have decided not to salvage the vessel, but have arranged to put her up for auction at Wellington this afternoon. The Shaw, Savill liner Gallic left New Plymouth for the Waitara roadstead yesterday morning, her cargo from this port consisting of 2887 carcases of mutton and 4113 quarters of beef. At Waitara loading operations naa to be suspended, owing to a rough bar, after two lighter loads had been shipped. The Prime Minister stated on Monday that there is a very satisfactory increase in the area which is intended to be sown in wheat during the coming season. As to the yield, Mr. Massey said that the threshing season is practically over, and we will soon know how we stand. He had been given to understand that while some districts would report a fall in the yield, others would report an increase. The Manawatu Standard reports that information has been received to the the matter (says the Wellington Times). It seems that to bring about tlw change desired, legislation will be needed, and' as the matter is regarded as of considerable importance to the country, it is probable that something will come beforo the approaching session of Parliament. « When one hears of £l5O per acre being realised for properties on the Palmerston-Ashliurst road, it is interesting (says the Feilding Star) to read the following extract from a letter written by the late Mr. John T. Stewart, formerly district surveyor: "In IS7I Swedish immigrants arrived at Foxton per *.s. Go-ahead, and to each was allotted 30 acres of land between Palmerston and Ashhurst. They were /'barged £1 i per acre, which they paid out of their ! earnings at road making." The matter of improvements to school teachers' residences by the provision of wash-houses, etc., was mentioned at WaiI tara yesterday in connection with matters that were brought befoVe the Minister of Education (the Hon. C J. Parr). Mr. R. Masters, M.P., chairman of the Education Board, expressed appreciation of the fact that Mr. Spencer wa6 prepared to recommend the granting of about £llOO to make such improvements to residences in the Taranaki district. Of that, about £134 was allocated to the residence at Waitara.

At last night's conference between the Education Board and the Minister of Education, the Hon. C. J. Parr stated .emphatically that he was not in favor of the change proposed by the New Zealand Educational Institute, whereby the control of educational matters would be taken away from the Boards and placed in the hands of local bodies. He did not think they were the people to control the education of the children, and ho appreciated very much the self-denial of the men who were undertaking the work of school committees and Education Boards. ' Potato crops in the south are reported to be excellent this year; and prices are low. Buyers are offering £3 10s a ton, but this growers will not as yet accept- In spite of the good crop and the low price offered to producers, housewives in Wellington are still called upon to pay Is for 81b or even for 6lb —a rate equivalent to iy 2 d or 2d per lb. If the price is 1J a lb, it means that it costs £lO to market and distribute a ton of potatoes for which the grower receives about £4. It is understood that the Prime Minister is asking the Board of Trade to look into the position.
