TOMMY BURNS' CHALLENGE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Coiftrlglit. London, May 20. Tommy Bums announces that he is prepared to put up £IOOO or £2OOO against Beckett, for the Empire Championship. If he wins he Is willing to meet Carpentier. Burns says he is convinced that he can come hade, but would not meet Dempsey, because he would have no earthly chance. MATCH AT WANGANUI. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganul, Last Night. In a contest for the professional bantam weight, championship of New Zealand, between \Y. Oliver (Haweva) and C. Cann (Wangunui), the holder of the title, Cann retained the championship. The referee stopped the contest In the sixth round. TOURNAMENT NEXT WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. At a committee meeting of the Taranakl Boxing Association last night, presided over by Mr. E. Whittle, final arrangements were made for the tournament. Good entries ha.ve been received for all of the six classes, and the going In the bantam, feather, and heavy-weight classes promises to be particularly interesting. The light, middle, and welter, whilst not drawing such big entries as the other three classes will be represented by some of the bestknown amateurs throughout the province Everything points tc the meeting being thfi best amateur tournament ever held In New Plymouth. To add to the interest the ownmitteo have arranged for a ten-round professional fight on each nlghjt. On Wednesday Richardson (New Plymouth) meets Thompson (Toko). Richardson is well-known locally and has been successful In- twenty professional fights. Thompson is also well-known throughout the province, and since last boxing here has had a number of successful fights In Franco and England. Both boxers are In fine fettle and the result will be very open each side being very confident of success On the second night Wlnlkl meets Brown and this again promises to be a vigorous and wellfought ton rounds battle.
