SCHOONER WRECKED.

ASHORE AT THE ISLANDS. By Telegraph.—Prsss Association. Auckland, Last, NightThe Fiji correspondent of the Herald states that the auxiliary four-masted schooner Defender is ' ashore, a total wreck, on Nukusoeea reef, in the southern portion of the Lau, or Windward Group, of the Fiji Islands. She is owned in America, and was bound for Levuka with a cargo of 430,000 feet of timber.

'Die Defender struck a reef on April 10. Within an hour her large boat had been smashed to matchwood, and three of her four masts had gone overboard. The crew reached a neighboring island in a dinghy. The news of the vessel's loss came afi bad news to the colony, which is quite out of building timber.
