_ Mr. J. H. Quilliam, of New Plymouth, is expected back in New Zealand, via aydney, early in June. Mr. T. ?. Hughson, chairman of the Opunake Harbor Board, who has been on a visit to the South Island, returned by the mail train last night. The Tnranaki Hospital Board yesterday received and accepted the resignation of Nurse D. G. Farlev, as from June 12th.
Mr. E. Allan, secretary of the Tukapa Football Club, who "is leaving for VVancanni, was farowclled bv members j of the Club last night, and "received a I presentation. At the annual conference of the Taranaki Provincial Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union yesterday a vote of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr. Burch, Dominion treasurer. The Conciliation Commissioner for the Northern and Taranaki industrial districts, Mr. T. Harle Giles, accompanied by Mrs. Giles, has left Auckland for the South. Mr. Giles, who has recently had a, severe nervous breakdown, is on a health trip. The appointment of Mr. Alex P. Lowe as clerk of the Legislative Council and Clerk of Parliaments for the Dominion lof New Zealand, vice the late Mr. Leonard Stowe, C.M.G-, is gazetted. Mr. Charles Barrow, a resident of Te Puke for many years, died there on Saturday last. The late Mr. Barrow came from the Taranaki district, and was well known as a judge at agricultural shows and as a breeder of draught horsesAt Dunedin last night the Prince of Wales bestowed the accolade on Sir Geo. Fenwick, upon whom knighthood was conferred last August (says a Press telegram). The ceremony was performed at the Dunedin Club in the pre*, once of Sir William Fraser, Dr. G. 11. Scholefield, and Mr. F. 11. Morgan. Reference was made by various delegates at flie conference of the Taranaki Farmers' Union yesterday to the splendid work done on the executive of the Union ever since its inception by Mr. R. Lambie, of Pihama. It was unanimously decided to appoint him a life member of the executive if the rules will permit. An Aucklnnder whoso association with Auckland dates back to the days of early settlement, died last week in (he person of Mr. George Gordon Aiekin. The deceased gentleman was the fifth eon of the la'te Br. Thomas Aiekin, and arrived in Auckland on the ship Mermaid on October IS, 18.,!). He joined the Railway Department over forty years ago, and after service in the Auckland goods office became stationmaster at Cambridge- He was appointed statioumaster at Onehunga, New Plymouth, and Wellington successively. About eleven years ago he retired from the Department, on account of a breakdown in health, and went to Auckland, where he has since resided.
