BOOSTING AUCKLAND.

At Saturday's meeting oE the Stratford County Council, a circular letter was received from the Auckland Railways "League suggesting co-operation anion" the local bodies of Auckland, Hawke's Bay, and Taranaki, in making a united effort to obtain a fairer share of loan expenditure in proportion to the larger growth in every respect of the North Island as a whole, which demands at least as a small measure of justice, the linking up of the main trunk lines, connecting Wellington directly bv railway via East Coast, Napier. Gisborne, Tauranga and Waihi to Auckland; also the link required to enahle the West Coast from New Plymouth and Stratford to be directly linked up with the Auckland Main Trunk system at Okahukura, and the mam trunk North Auckland railway to Hokianga. These lines were among the number to be carried out in the Public Works scheme of IS7O. The League enclosed a copv of a petition which it was proposed should be presented to Parliament next session, and asked whether the Council would join with the League in having the petition signed in the district The Council decided to take no action in the matter, several councillors expressing the opinion that it was only a scheme to boost Auckland at the expense of the rest of the North Island.
