MEAT AT HOME.
REASONS FOR THE GLUT. DRASTIC REDUCTION IN PRICKS. By Telesraph.—rress Assn.—Copyright. Received May 10, 5.5 p.m. London, Mav !■"! The Pood Minister (Mr. C. A. McCurdy), in a statement, said, "as- regards the glut of meat imported from Australasia, that this was due to a rapid diminution of the requirements of the Allied forces on the termination of the war. The British people temporarily wore eating; half a million tons less fresh meat annually than normally. They were only eating three pounds now compared with four before the war. The only apparent explanation was that war time habits had not yet been forgotten. The Government had decided to reduce the wholesale price of mutton from the all-round figure of !!d to prices ranging from C'/.d to 9d retail. The control of prices will be removed. He expressed the opinion that this drastic reduction would tend to steady and even lower prices of other commodities. He declared only one half one per cent- of all meat handled had been condemned.—lmperial Service.
