A deputation of employers affected by the 44-hours' week agitation waited on Mr. Cann and protested against the agitation. It stated that the cost of no Saturday work annually would be eight or ten millions. The reduction of hours Would mean the employment of an additional 12,500 workers to maintain the output, and an additional 15 millions would have to be spent to provide plant for these worker.?. As neither additional plant nor workers were available this would mean the employment of ordinary workers at time and a half, which would cost the community another 30 millions annually. BUILDING TRADE EESUMES. Melbourne, May 14. A ballot of building trad<? employees resulted in a majority in favor of the abolition of the 40-hours' week «trike and a return to work on the old terms. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
