Miss Madoline Knight, who has established herself as a warm favourite with the New Zealand public, has received by cable a most tempting offer to join tlu> big Australian touring combination known as "The Huxham Serenaders." The management needed a high-class mezzo-soprano and offered a twelve months' engagement with the company. Miss Knight has accepted and will leave Auckland' for Sydney next Thursday evening to take up her work. OBITUARY. Miss Emily Kingcome Crocker, whose death occurred last week, was an old and highly respected resident »f this town. She came from Djpvon early in 1841 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Crocker ,on the ''William Bryan," the pioneer ship of the Plymouth Company. Her kindly disposition won for her a large circle of friends by whom she will be greatly missed. Her only surviving sister, widow of the late Rev. Alexander Reid, resides in Auckland. PRIVATE DANCE. Mrs. H. Greig was hostess at a most enjoyable dance at her residence last evening. ENGAGEMENTS. The engagement is announced of Miss Decima Tripe, only daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. D. Tripe (Wanganui), to Mr. H. C. Date, of the Btaff of the Union Bank of Australia, Wanganui. CHILDREN'S DAN.CE. Mrs. E. A. Walker, who is shortly leaving her beautiful home on the Avenue Road to reside nearer town, gave a delightful children's dance at "Dunmure" last night. The dining-room was turned into a ball room, and looked a picture with festoons of lyeopodium, asparagus fern, interspersed with scarlet berries and autumn leaves, while the pink shaded lights added greatly to the effect. The hall was arranged as a sitting-room, with comfy easy chairs and chesterfields, and was decorated with pink and gold chrysanthemums, as were also the drawing-room and study, where supper was laid. Such a happy time was spent by the.small guests that keen regret was felt when "going home" time came.

The bride was attended by Miss Elsie Waite (sister ui the bridegroom) and Miss' Dolly Goodwin (sister of the bride). Miss Annie Street and Miss .Mary McKimion were the (lower girls. Mr. V. Goodwin performed the duties of best man. After the service, the partv were entertained at breakfast in the Medina Tea Rooms. After the usual toasts were honored the happy couple left bv the afternoon train for Wanganui, where the honeymoon is being spent. The bride's travelling dress was a gray costume, with black fur, the gift of the bridegroom. The presents were numerous and costly.
