BOXING.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. The tournament promoted by the Ilawera Six/rts and Club 011 Wednesday (light was splendidly managed, Iho arrangements being a credit to the committee and officii! Is concerned. The principal bout, between Oliver and Keenan, proved ratlusr a disappointment, Keennn s extra poundage and aggressive tactics proving too much for Oliver. In the early mmds Oliver held the advantage, showing the Im'Ucl science and getting in sumo good work at clc.se quarters. In the third find fourth rounds ho appeared to have Kecua,u gone, but in the sixth round the latter forced the pact and his aggressive tactics beat Oliver, who never had a look in, the towel being skied in the tenth round. Of the amateur bouts, the "go*' between Canute (Stratford) and Tope (Toko) in the heavyweights, pleased the nudience most. The contest was a eleau one, free from clinching, botii contestants taking and giving punishment with smiling faces. Each showed considerable science, but Canute had the advantage. Visiting boxers were entertained at "a smoker" afterwards, when the trophies were presented by Mr. W. Mahoney, who, by the way, made a capital announcer. An enjoyable time was spent . Quite a number of enthusiasts are coming from Hawera to the tournament which is to be held in New Plymouth on May 20 and 27' by the Taranaki Boxing Association, and the Sports and Pastimes Club Is lending 'valuable assistance, by giving the local club the use of their ring and mat fotr the two evenings. The secretary lias had numerous inquiries from amateurs who intend to compete in the various classes, whilst tho professionals engaged In the bouts each evening are in active training, and expect to strip in perfect condition. An interested spectator at tho Hawera tournament was T. Thompson, the returned soldier, who is to meet G. Richardson here on Wednesday, 26th. inst.
