SHEEP STEALING.
STATION MANAGER CONVICTED. A LIGHT PENALTY. By Tele;rrn ph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. At the Supreme Court, Adam Murdoch McDonald, manager of the Ormaglade station, near Roxburgh, was charged with the theft of some thirty sheep from neighboring sheepowners. The evidence went to show that carmarks of sheep straying on the Ormaglade station had been tampered with. The jury retired at 5 p.m., and returned at 10.40 p.m. with a verdict of guilty, with a very strong recommendation to mercy on account of laxity in the manner in which the ear-marking of sheep ii; the districts generally had been carried out in the .past; also oh account of the non-observance of the regulations required by law as to notifying neighboring sheepowners of musterings, and also on account of the age and character of the accused in the past. His Honor Judge Sim sa.;d that in view of the circumstances and the jury's recommendation he -would be justified in imposing a pecuniary penalty. The accused wasflned £125, which is sufficient to cover the expenses of the prosecution.
