STRATFORD.

[Stratford Itepresentative: W. J. Wilson, Broadway North. Telephone 338.) h' May 12. _ A large number of Stratford residents journeyed to Hawera to-day to attend the races, and the town was very qniet this afternoon.

A Stratford resident was complaining the other day that the electric light, charges seemed very high, and his friend remarked that there was a very good reason why this was ao, because during the winter months the mountain shut out the light early in the afternoon. The complainant remarked that if this was so a deputation should wait on somebody, asking that the mountain be moved somewhere else.

A party of half-a-dozen business men, who were having morning tea together to-day, began a discussion on Stratford's most urgent requirements, and pride of place in the list of "wants" was given to the Main Trunk railway, the new post office coming second on the list. During the discussion the opinion was expressed that the greatest blight on Stratford's progress was the number of absentee owners of property on Broadway, ■and resident owners who would neither sell nor improve their property, but merelj' waited for the unearned" increment which they did absolutely nothing for. The general verdict was that such owners should be compelled to sell their property if they wouldn't improve it, or, failing this, that the Borough Council should exercise its authority and condemn all the old and dilapidated buildings on the west side of Broadway. Mr. C. IJ. Sole (chairman of the Stratford Hospital Board) and Mr. C. R. Finnerty (representative of the Whangamomona County Council on the Board) left for Whangamomona to-night to make enquiries into the medical requirements of the district.
